Sweet Charity by B.J. Bassett is a heart-warming fictional work that speaks of the deep bonds of love between a mother and daughter, lost love, and a life-threatening battle with leukemia. Set amidst the backdrop of the Vietnam War, Nancy’s past is revealed through present, past, and future circumstances.

Dr. Nancy St. John is about to meet her baby girl that she had given up for adoption as a young, unwed teenager. For Nancy, this brings a twenty-year secret and unwanted emotional baggage. After meeting with Hope for the first time, Nancy finds herself sifting through the past, as she faces issues and deep scars of hatred, confusion, unforgiveness, abandonment, and rejection from the past.

Her past unfolds, as we find Nancy was young and in love in 1958 with Skip. Finding herself pregnant and unwed young girls were frowned upon in society and sent away in shame to birth their children. Once born, the baby girl was whisked from Nancy at birth which became a nightmare that she had spent years recovering from. It was apparent that her own self-isolation grew over the years and the unannounced visit of her birth daughter, Hope takes Nancy by surprise.

In an instant, an unprepared Nancy has to face a young girl that is the mirror image of herself. Around Hope’s neck is a possession that she recognizes – it is the gold heart locket that Nancy had purchased as a goodbye gift to her first daughter. With an inscription on the back, one day she hoped that her daughter would know and understand that God had a good life planned for her.

With a flair for dialogue and character description, the author takes readers on a journey that is a wonderfully blended telling of second chance romance, restoration with family members, and a reconciliation with past relationships. Newfound faith invigorates readers, as the author reveals the strong ties of love that cannot be broken between a mother and child.

Sweet Charity comes as a highly recommended Christian-based fictional romance that focuses on the redemption of Jesus Christ and restoration in family relationships! A delightful read!
